What is the state of remote work in Germany?

The short answer is remote work does exist in IT companies in Germany, but there are certain caveats to how remote functions here. Let's dive in.

When it comes to different work options for data scientists in Germany, there are three main ones: hybrid, fully remote and strictly on-site work. Each mode has its nuances, which we discuss below.

What is Hybrid?

Most of the IT-companies operating in Germany offer a Hybrid model of work. So what is this Hybrid beast exactly?

In most of the cases hybrid means you have to work three days a week from the company's office and then during the remaining two days you can work from the home-office. Some of the companies restrict home-office days to specific weekdays, whereas others offer more flexibility. At "restrictive" companies typically Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays would be the office days, whereas on Wednesdays and Fridays employees would be allowed to work from home in case they are willing to.

At some IT-companies hybrid mode also allows for fully remote offsite weeks. That means you have the option to work remotely for 2 to 4 weeks per year. Depending on the company and its remote working policy, you may be required to work remotely only within European Union, which basically doesn't allow you to spend the whole January working from warm and beautiful country of Thailand or Bali.

Examples of modern tech companies that offer their data scientists and their employees in general the option of hybrid work are:

- Delivery Hero

- and others (see our job list for that)

What is Fully remote?

Fully remote work is quite difficult to nail in Germany. Problem is, remote work in IT is not really common here.

Those companies that do offer a fully offsite job would often require you to be geographically based in Germany and to keep your tax residency in Germany, so you could pay your duties to the German government and the social benefits it maintains for its residents.

One of the few companies offering fully remote option is: Wolt.

What are On-site jobs?

On-site jobs are typical jobs, where you would commute from your home place to the company office every day and work there. While curating our list of data science jobs in Germany, we have not yet stumbled upon decent job opportunities with fully on-site requirement yet.
